One person asked on my Facebook page @bobo4lojo what my strategy and mission was for the district. Thank you for that question. There is great misunderstanding as to the role of a school board trustee. I have read the TASB 2020 Guide for School Board Candidates and understand there are very clear and defined roles. I am not to bring my personal mission or agenda as a condition of service. My mission is therefore the district’s mission and further defined by the 5 board priorities at https://www.lovejoyisd.net/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=388930&type=d&pREC_ID=1288702. I want to support Lovejoy’s mission with my volunteer experience and business/technology background. As a board, they want to see the execution of the district’s mission for all students. I believe in the mission of Lovejoy and that’s why I want to support it: “A school in partnership with parents and community, committed to providing opportunities for students to reach their academic and personal potential in a changing world.”
We are accustomed in this political world with candidates joining a race because they have issues or causes that they want to see accomplished. It is very clearly stated in the handbook (and I even put it on my website) that having that mindset is not appropriate. A member of the local board is a guardian of the public trust and they are ultimately responsible for the success or failure of the district. What you should be asking any of the candidates and myself, is that do they have the background, the knowledge, the experience, the tenacity and the grit to make sure Dr. Goddard is accomplishing the mission and providing the experiences and curriculum to back the five pillars of the graduate profile. Dr. Goddard, if I’m elected, is the only employee that reports to the board and as a board will make sure he is fulfilling the mission. Having no personal agenda means I can represent all students fairly and equally as I am called to do in the job requirements of a school board trustee. I am called to act on behalf of all the citizens (or stakeholders) of the school district, not just some.
The board does do other things like sets the priorities for the district each year, holds Superintendent accountable for executing the priorities by continuous review and coaching, sets school policies, and sets and approves budget and tax rates. The board's role is to do those things in support of the overall mission.
I hope that helps clarify my mission for my candidacy…. my mission for the district is the board’s mission for the district.
